Our flight to Panama City was smooth and easy. We didn't see the Panama Canal but we did see MANY cargo ships waiting to enter as we flew in. They are HUGE.
We had a tight connection so hurried to our new gate where our flight from Panama to Quito was boarding. We settled in, strapped in and waited and waited... So many stories of people trapped on planes on runways After an hour passed during which I thought there was a problem with the door, an announcement was made in Spanish. Luckily we shared our row with a young woman born in Ecuador but now living in NYC. She told us there had been an earthquake in Quito and that the airport was closed!
How's THAT for our first adventure. WE sat there for another hour with no further news. No hint of how bad it was. Finally after a second hour we were told the airport had reopened and we were cleared for take off.
On arrival in Quito we learned it had been a 5.6 earthquake. After a wonderfully (in the dark) taxi ride in from the airport to the old city, we are happily in our very charming guest house. I guess we will learn more tomorrow. Tonight I sleep!
Stay tuned....
