Quito

First whoever is getting the weather from Ecuador to the US is Waaay off.   Today was beautiful, sunny, and warm.   Just right.  Quito seems to have no flat land or very little.  you are either going up or going downhill.  We see the same mix of wealth and poverty we have seen in so many places.  We walked to the central squae of the old town where we are staying an decided to take the city tour bus open on the top to enjoy the beautiful weather and to get a flavor of this city.

Churches have amazing detail
This church is called Compania a Jesus - as some will know - this is the original name of the Jesuits.  It is about 200 years old and dedicated to St Ignatius founder of the Jesuits.  The Jesuits were kicked out of Quito for political reasons and the church given to a local Order.

It used to have the tallest steeple in Quito until an earthquake destroyed the steeple ,   then another earthquate destroyed much of the interior.  Then it was given back to the Jesuits in the last century and they were restoring it when a fire burned out the interior.
There are parks everywhere and well used

This statue of Mary with wings can be seen frm most everywhere in Quito.  It is quite controversial.  It is much more attrctive fr a distance as up close it seems to be made of somethig like fish scales.

This is one building of a huge hospital complex with buildings for every specialty including criminal forensics lab, research facilities,   blocks and blocks

Newer part of the city

/thus park is probably as big as Central Park in NYC.  This is a section dedicated to skateboardig stunts and biking.  The graffiti is in a chute ending in a large bowl.  There was a section where we were told old men played a popular game like rolling marbles but the marbles were big balls,  there was a huge chiildren's section, there football,  tennis courts,   places to be quiet and meditate.

This was in an area of poor houses - the kind of area the earthquake hit hardest and where the people died.

Many apartments

The Cathedral

Lots of retaining walls

Our bus went down this hill

Quito from above.  No rain today.  It was beautiful!
